Armored Core 4

Customizing your weapon of war is just as deep and complicated as ever. What will make the hardcore AC fan squeal in excitement may just turn off the average action gamer. This brings out a persistent critical fault of the Armored Core series, the ability to cater to both audiences.

Air combat is just as fun as it is hectic.

The multiplayer experience is the real bread and butter for Armored Core 4. After the mech-junkies perfect their rig in the solo campaign, they can take it online to compete in deathmatch or team deathmatch arenas. While there isn’t a whole lot of match variety, it is a blast to rocket around a city blowing up your friends with your perfectly tweaked machine. It’s not as deep as Chromehounds’ conquest, but it’s much more exciting.

Much like Gears of War’s multiplayer, you can have a maximum of eight players, or four on four team deathmatches. Armored Core 4 has no respawns so don’t expect a long drawn out conflict. A full match with veteran players will generally last five to seven minutes. With a solid frame-rate and the dedication to the hardcore fanbase that the Armored Core franchise has developed, AC 4 is a great place for fans to set up shop and blow each others laboriously crafted machines to spare parts.

The level of customization is bound to get some gamers excited.

Highs
Fast mech combat, with fun multiplayer; great level of customization; very nice looking game.

Lows
Not enough interesting missions, and they tend to be too short; may not appeal to casual action gamers.

Final Verdict
Targeted towards fans and hardcore gamers, Armored Core 4 does well what it sets out to do, yet may leave casual gamers looking for something else.
