Armored Core 4

Full of fast destruction, but it may not appeal to casual gamers.

With the giant-robo genre of gaming you are generally presented with two flavors. The MechWarrior tradition of hulking tank-like machines or the anime inspired tradition that more resembles the Gundam properties. FROM Software’s Armored Core 4 gives us the chance to experience the twitchy, fast paced combat that is virtually the antithesis of FROM’s earlier mecha release for the 360 – see Chromehounds.

The explosion and particle effects look fantastic.

For the first time in Armored Core history, we are seeing a release outside of the Playstation platform. This seems to be the only real drastic shake up in the franchise this time around, save for the shiny new coat of polish on the graphics. Armored Core 4 still follows the same formula we have seen time and time again, but with slight next-gen flair.

Starscream eat your circuits out.

The mechs look just as fantastic as you would expect, but the real visual treats come in the ambiance and atmosphere. You’ll find yourself fighting on an island at sunset with reds and oranges rippling off the water while a thousand targets fly over the ocean to your position only lit by the blue glow of afterburners.

Slicing other mechs down with your plasma blade is strangely satisfying.
