Ice, snow, giant bugs and snow pirates! What's one man to do? Grab your parka, grab your weapons and get ready for the fight of your life in Capcom's "Lost Planet".
I have to confess, I haven’t been an Xbox 360 owner for very long. My brother gave me one for Christmas. This is not to say that I’m a PC convert. My gaming has been first and foremost on the PC and will always be. That’s not to say that I don’t enjoy sitting in the living room and popping in a console game and playing it with no problems.
Well playing games on the 360 hasn’t been problem free for me, but that’s a story for another time. I haven’t heard about too many games on the Xbox 360 and I did go shopping for some. I heard about two that were supposed to be really good. “Gears of War” and “Lost Planet” were the two that were most talked about. The one good thing about shopping for games that cost $59.00, is that it has cured me of impulse game shopping. So I was really thankful when my editor sent me “Lost Planet” for review. It gave me a chance to really see HD gaming at its best!
“It’s a bug planet, an ugly planet”. That’s what I thought when playing this game. My first thought was of “Starship Troopers”. The science fiction background is nothing original, nothing ground breaking. It’s the typical story of colonization, revenge, love and betrayal. Humankind has abandoned earth in order to colonize the planet E.D.N III. The only problem is the Akrid, a giant race of insects, already inhabits the planet. Mankind left the planet, but in their wake, they discovered a new energy source called T-Eng (thermal energy). And if there’s one thing we know about man, is we never pass up a good energy source.
Thus begins your quest through the game’s eleven campaign missions. Your job is to destroy the Akrid, stop the snow pirates and find out what happened to your father. A very tall order for the main character Wayne. When you enter the game, you’ll play in third-person with the usual stuff on the screen. You’ll have your life gauge, thermal energy timer, radar and targeting reticle. The scenery is absolutely gorgeous. Abandoned buildings covered in snow, the barren landscape. You’ll almost feel the cold through your TV.
