Lost Planet: Extreme Condition

The game also boasts some of the best explosions and smoke effects I’ve seen in any game. Although I’m confused as to why the game’s snowy features are highlighted, because you’ll spend half your time in-game underground in lava flowing bug infested tunnels and inside of various structures. The Akrid will really catch you off guard at times. Sometimes you know they’re around, but don’t know where they will pop-up from and sometimes they’ll scare the shit out of you. You’ll also fight plenty of snow pirates and some of them will be boss battles. They will be a little harder to fight than the insects.

The landscapes are done very well, but map explorers need not apply. You have to rush through, you can’t rest, you have to keep moving and collect as many T-Eng as possible. T-Eng is the new fuel and it powers your life support system. When it runs out, you die, whether or not your life bar is full or not. This is a cheesy way of sneaking in a mission timer, but that’s what it is. You shouldn’t worry too much. There are plenty of things in the game that replenish T-Eng. Including, killing Akrid (my daughter reminds me to pick up the alien poop), blowing up storage tanks and killing snow pirates.

There are plenty of weapons to aid you in your quest to defeat the enemy. This is where Lost Planet shines. In some games, you have to clear many levels in order to obtain the more exotic weapons. Not in Lost Planet, there are weapons and VS (vital suit) mechs laying all over the battlefield. All you have to do is find them or dig for them. So far, I’ve found at least 18 types of weapons and at least seven different VS. During gameplay you’ll figure out what combination of weapons are best for any particular situation. My personal favorite is the plasma gun.

The game has all of the usual elements of multiplayer capability. You can have up to 16 players online and you have the usual selection of gameplay including team elimination, elimination, post grab and fugitive. You set up your teams, time limits, equipment, etc. and then you have at it. As usual this adds to replayability, because the single player game is very short. The game would have benefited greatly if it did not have the hidden timer. As it is, you feel rushed when you’re playing. So you basically have to move from point “A” to point “B” very quickly. All in all the game is still very good. Lost Planet comes highly recommended!

Highs
Cool weapons; great explosions; beautiful landscapes and environments.

Lows
Hidden level timer; linear gameplay; very short single player game.

Final Verdict
An entertaining game with a high quality visual flair that will satisfy any shooter fan. Includes a surprisingly complete and detailed manual. It provides an exciting level of entertainment and will keep you on the edge of your seat with jaw-dropping action and very creative bug designs.
