Jump Ultimate Stars is not only one of the best anime games of all time, it's one of the best DS games of all time.
Anime fans, it’s time to wake up because the game that you have been dreaming about has finally arrived. Jump Ultimate Stars is not only one of the best anime/manga based fighters out there; it’s also one of the best games available for the Nintendo DS right now. The only catch is that this is one game that no matter how successful it becomes, will never make it outside of Japan’s borders.
For the many of you that are likely unfamiliar with last years Jump Superstars, here is the basic breakdown. The “Jump” in the title refers to Shounen Jump, a huge weekly manga magazine in Japan that houses some of the most popular anime and manga characters in existence. The idea behind Jump Ultimate Stars, just like Jump Superstars before it, is to bring together all of the most popular Shounen Jump characters into one humongous crossover fighting game. How humongous is it you ask? Let me put up some numbers for you.
As you can see, things can pretty chaotic when there are four players all using their supports at the same time.
In Jump Ultimate Stars you’ll find over 300 characters from 41 manga series in the Shounen Jump lineup. Well over 50 of these characters are playable and almost all of them have several versions with slightly different movesets. The remaining characters are either help or support characters, and while they may not be playable, they are just as important to winning as the battle characters are. But we’ll get into all of that stuff involving the battle, support, and help characters in a little bit. First let’s talk about the basic gameplay.
The gameplay at first glance will look a little bit like Super Smash Brothers. Fights are played out on a 2D arena complete with platforms, environmental hazards, pit falls, and a slew of items. Some of the tactics that you would use in Smash Brothers like edge guarding, edge hogging, and L canceling even apply to Jump Ultimate Stars. But don’t let the similarities fool you, because Jump Ultimate Stars is a completely different experience than Smash Brothers.
