Unfortunately at the start of the game, you only start out with one premade deck consisting of a four panel battle koma of Naruto, a four panel battle koma of Luffy, and a couple of throw away support and help komas. By playing through the J-Galaxy mode however, you can unlock more characters by visiting the planets of each of the 41 series featured in the game. Each planet has a set of missions with a primary objective and several secondary objectives.

The deck creation system. Here we have two battle characters, three supports, and two help characters.

By beating the primary objective, you will usually receive the help koma of one of the main characters of whatever series the planet you are playing on is themed after. For example, if you were playing on the Shaman King planet, the first mission objective demands that you obtain the most points by KO’ing your opponents. If you beat this objective, you unlock the next mission in the Shaman King planet and you will receive the help koma of the main character in Shaman King, Yoh Asakura. By completing the secondary objectives you can obtain more characters from that series as well as a nice amount of gems.

What are gems for you ask? Well let’s stick with the Shaman King example. Now you have the help koma for Yoh Asakura and a nice amount of gems that you obtained by completing the secondary objectives. You can now open up Yoh’s character evolution chart and spend your gems to unlock Yoh’s battle koma or support koma. Once you unlock his four panel battle koma, you can unlock his five panel as well if you have a sufficient amount of gems. This system works great because it allows you to choose for yourself what characters you want to unlock and which ones you want to ignore so you can save your gems.

In addition to the J-Galaxy mode, there are several other modes of play that include your standard battle against the computer mode, a training mode to practice your combos, a mission mode that allows you to replay selected missions from J-Galaxy and try to beat your best score, a quiz mode that tests your Shounen Jump knowledge if you know Japanese, and finally a ranking mode that lets you take one deck and put it through a series of twenty battles.
