Red Steel

The first FPS for the Wii isn’t perfect, but it isn’t too bad either.

The first of probably many games to use a sword and/or gun on a Wii game launched alongside the Wii on Sunday. I was able to snatch up a Wii and a few games, Red Steel included. Unfortunately, I was only able to free-up two hours of my day to play Red Steel, but those two hours were well spent. Red Steel turned out to be all that I hoped it would be, with a few minor exceptions. I'll spread some of the juicy details and features that this game has so that you can see if you should pick up this game.

First off, let's talk about what this game has to offer the player, you. There is an intense story mode that includes dramatic sequences, a progressive storyline, and constant action. There is also a multiplayer mode, but I wasn't able to try that out yet. The entire game also requires the use of both controllers, the nun chuck and the Wii remote, which can get tiring, but is fun nonetheless.

You’ll enjoy the skill needed to play this game, if you can learn it.

When you first begin playing Red Steel, you'll go through a sort of tutorial which has you setting your sensitivity, learning the basics of the control schemes, and getting to know the story. This tutorial is actually the first level of the game and doesn't feel like a tutorial at all. If you're like me and were having your first Wii experience with this game, you'll find yourself getting simply immersed in the sense of not playing, but interacting with the story you're getting involved in.

It takes about 15 minutes, or the entire first level, to start really 'getting' the whole motion sensing thing. You should start having an easy time with the controls after a while (45 minutes), but until then, don't get discouraged! It will become easier with time, trust me. After you've passed the first level, the real fun begins, because now you know what the crap you're doing which is half the battle with most of the Wii games, in my mind.
