Nintendo Wii: Gaming for the Masses?

Bowling

Bowling was also a big hit due to the fact that we all go out to bowl at the bowling alley every couple of weeks. Bowling took a little getting used to since you actually do have to press some buttons as opposed to simply swinging the wiimote like you would in tennis. However, the biggest surprise of the night came when our littlest player scored a strike on her very first bowl! The family room roared with cheers and laughter and immediately I realized that this was what the Wii was all about. To be able to incite this much emotion from people who have never even truly picked up a game controller in their life is an enormous accomplishment.

My own father, who actually had played video games way back in the old days and even became a fairly respectable Pac-Man player, had this to say regarding Bowling: “I liked it very much. The wireless remote made the biggest difference along with the fact that you could adjust the position of the ball, control the speed of the ball and even the curve of the ball and you do it just as if you were holding the ball at the bowling alley.”

Getting a strike in Wii Bowling is just as satisfying as getting a strike in real bowling.

Final Thoughts

Having fun is one thing, but actually wanting to purchase a $250 video game console based on a couple of hours of play time is a completely different story. All but one person said that they would be interested in purchasing a Wii, with the one exception being my father who said that he wasn’t sold on the idea of it being a family system and that he would only get it if I wanted it for myself. It just goes to show that even with a mass appeal, there will still be people that love video games enough to buy them, enjoy them enough to play them without spending money on them, and sometimes people that just can’t get into them altogether.

In the end though, thanksgiving this year for me was memorable not only because of how delicious the turkey and mashed potatoes were, but also because it was the first time that our family and friends were able to throw away labels like young and old, big and small, gamer and nongamer and simply have fun playing video games.
