Is the Console War Good for Gaming?

Home : Games : Articles

An interesting look at how our famed "Console Wars" are analogous to...the arms race?

It's the middle of the 20th century. After World War II, the U.S. and the Soviet Union vied to become the ultimate international superpower. In an effort to best the opposing side, they produced large amounts of weaponry, amassed massive armies, and developed incredible strides in technology. But when you think about it, what was the goal of their actions? Nothing, really. They simply wanted to have the international muscle of a steroid-pumped baseball player. All of this ended in 1991, as one combatant, the Soviet Union, collapsed. Amid all of the competition, during all of the advancements, one member couldn't handle the pressure.

Sound familiar? Every console generation, companies compete much like the U.S. and the Soviets tussled during the Cold War. They gain huge amounts of supporters to develop on their console; they try to cram a boatload of technological trinkets to make their console bigger, stronger, and faster; they vie for videogame supremacy. While competition may be a great thing in advancing how videogames are played, I have a different sentiment.

Of course I believe technological advancement is amazing. If not, we'd still be stuck in 1990, playing with our Nintendo Entertainment Systems; The Big N continuing to milk out every cent they could before any opposing forces arrive. But is the competition so peremptory that every other "war casualty" should be thrown to the wayside? I don't think so. That is why I think the console war is bad.

Please, hold your tomatoes and other projectiles, and wait until I make my point!
