When it comes to aiding our favorite heroes, these sidekicks know how to get the job done.

In preparation for Fable 2 and Fallout 3’s (both releasing in October) canine companions, we’ve decided to take a look at a few of our favorite animal sidekicks from the past. Whether they are tagging along for the journey or assisting in matters bigger than they could’ve ever imagined, it’s clear our picks have won hearts worldwide.

Rush
First Appearance: Mega Man 3 (1990)
Last Appearance: Mega Man 9 (2008)

There's no one more dependable than Rush.

As Mega Man’s trusty sidekick, Rush is a robotic dog that can transform into various forms. Whether it’s a submarine or a motorcycle, Rush is one of the most useful companions to ever grace a video game. As a preference, Beat (Mega Man’s robotic bird) doesn’t hold a candle in comparison to Rush. It’s always exciting when Rush comes to Mega Man’s aid, so he’ll always have a place reserved on this list.

Yoshi
First Appearance: Super Mario World (1990)
Last Appearance: Mario Kart Wii (2008)

Yoshi became his own star after Super Mario World.

Making his debut in Super Mario World, Mario’s famous dinosaur has earned quite a reputation over the years. Yoshi’s popularity rose far enough to star in his own titles (Yoshi’s Island) and has effectively been featured in every Mario party/sports/racing title for Nintendo. Having the ability to chew up an enemy and turn them into an egg, Yoshi is truly a unique cohort of Mario.
